i believe finding a balancing point between contradictory things can expose commonality. balancing points contain both tension and harmony.
flowers can be confrontational or symbiotic with their neighbors. flowers wilt to the touch and break through concrete. they make love to themselves or with others. they are creative, innovative, and indifferent.
street art balances between destructive and creative. between cultural institutional biases. between high art and low art. street art can come with corporate sponsorship or a class two misdemeanor.
when brought inside, flowers die rapidly. the impermanence is part of what makes them beautiful. is the same true for street art? once a piece of street art no longer has the ever present danger of disappearing, does it lose part of its biology? does it simply become (like a floral depiction) a representation of something else?
floral works with street art techniques highlight the paradoxical question, “what belongs inside and what belongs outside?”
